I was asked to work on a documentary for ITV called Victoria’s Palace about how Queen Victoria turned Buckingham Palace from a bit of a laughing stock to one of the world’s most iconic buildings. The programme explores the day to day workings of the palace and recreates a typical meal for Victoria and her household. Not a banquet – but to give an idea of how she and her ‘upstairs’ household would have dined on a usual evening towards the beginning of her reign. Myself and Ian Sutton created a few dishes which were eaten by Sir Trevor McDonald, OBE a Trinidadian-British newsreader and journalist, best known for his career as a news presenter with ITN. Plus Julie Etchingham an English television newsreader and journalist and Annie Gray historian, cook, broadcaster and writer specialising in the history of food and dining in Britain from around 1600 to the present day.
